Stereotactic
Surgery
Stereotactic
surgery is a surgical technique whereby the exact target (i.e. tumour, lesion,
AVM) is calculated three-dimensionally utilizing CT or MRI or both together
using a fusing technology which is available at the Neuro Spinal Hospital.
This technique can be used, for example, to obtain a biopsy to diagnose a
brain lesion. Once the target is
located with laser precision a 6-8 mm burhole, (hole in the skull), is made
through which a 2-3 mm probe or catheter is introduced to take the biopsy,
remove a clot or introduce a radiation source to treat a deep brain tumour, (brachytherapy).
Functional
stereotactic neurosurgery is used in the treatment of Parkinson’s and other
movement disorders as well as in some psychiatric diseases.
Endovascular
Procedures:
Endovascular,
(inside the blood vessels), procedures are used to diagnose and treat vascular
malformations in the brain such as aneurisms and artero venous malformations
(AVMs) without open surgery. Catheters
are introduced through blood vessels usually in the groin area and directed to
the brain vessels. Once in place
the malformations are treated with micro catheters, sometimes introducing
medical ‘glue’ which blocks the abnormal vessels allowing blood to flow
through the healthy vessels.
In
the case of an aneurysm (abnormal bulging, stretching of a weakened vessel,
which may rupture), a coil or balloon is introduced through the micro catheter
into the aneurysm and thereby blocking the bulge and strengthening the vessel
without the use of a surgical knife. .
In the case of arterial stenosis, (narrowing of the blood vessel), a
stent, (vessel wall protector), is introduced through the micro catheter which
widens the narrowed vessel enabling a healthy blood flow.
This procedure can prevent the occurrence of a stroke, (also known as a
‘brain attack’). All of these
procedures are performed at the Neuro Spinal Hospital and are minimally invasive
