The Board of Trustees of the Sheikh
Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences intends to implement
the mission of the foundation as conceived by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid
Al Maktoum, the patron of the awards. In addition to encouraging and
rewarding individuals who have made contributions to the conquest of disease and
the relief of human suffering, Hamdan Awards Foundation hopes that these
international awards will assist in focusing public, professional and scientific
attention upon the most significant achievements in the medical field. It is
also expected that the awards would contribute to improved communication of
knowledge among scientists in the UAE and abroad.

Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan
His
Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan is the Minister of Higher
Education and Scientific Research of UAE. H.E. Sheikh Nahayan’s
enthusiasm and determination in all challenges that he led became reality.
H.E. Sheikh Nahayan is the founder of the Faculty of Medicine & Health
Sciences and also the Chancellor of United Arab Emirates University. H.E.
Sheikh Nahayan’s valuable contributions to the health and welfare of the
people of United Arab Emirates are countless.

Obstetrics & Gynecology (Infertility)
Prof. Robert G Edwards
– Executive Editor, Reproductive Biomedicine Online, Duck End farm,
Drayton,
Cambridge, UK.
Prof.Edwards and
his colleagues jointly created the first test tube baby, Louise Brown in
1978. He established the first IVF Clinic in 1980 and surpassed more than
1 million births till date. At the present he is the founder and chief
editor of Reproductive Biomedicine Online.

FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH EXCELLENCE-Gene Therapy of Inherited Disorders
Prof. W French
Anderson – Director,
Gene Therapy Laboratories, Professor of Biochemistry and Pediatrics,
University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, Norris Cancer
Center, Los Angeles, USA.
Prof. Anderson’s achievements are mainly in the Science of Innovative
Biomedical Research and for which he is being awarded.

Foo Yew Liew –
Gardiner Professor and Head of Department, Department of Immunology and
Bacteriology, University of Glasgow, UK.
Prof.
Liew’s outstanding contributions to the understanding of the fundamental
aspects of the immune response is deserving of being awarded.

Prof. Ăke Lernmark – Professor – Department of Medicine
& Adjunct Professor – Department of Immunology, University of
Washington, USA.
Prof.
Lernmark’s contributions to the science of diabetes and diabetes
research are mainly to the understanding of autoimmune insulin dependent
diabetes or Type 1 diabetes and development of novel approaches to treat
this serious human autoimmune disease. Prof. Lernmark highly deserves, for
his outstanding contributions to
the understanding of the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease combining
studies in man with that in experimental animals, the Hamdan Award.

Prof. Martin
Raff – MRC
Laboratories for Molecular cell Biology & Biology Department,
University College, London, UK. Prof.
Martin Raff is a world leader in Molecular Cell Biology. His
influential reviews on the molecular biology of the cell, is a great
achievement. Prof. Raff’s group
also contributed to the world- wide effort of analysing the process of
programmed cell death. His success has made him a worthy recipient,
for his outstanding experimental contributions to the role of cell death
during development and in whole organisms, of the Hamdan Award.

AWARD FOR VOLUNTEERS INHUMANITARIAN MEDICAL SERVICES
1-Al Maktoum
Foundation – United Arab Emirates.
Al Maktoum charity
foundation launched its humanitarian services in1997. This foundation was
the nucleus for the charity drive begun by H.H.Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al
Maktoum. Al Maktoum foundation has sponsored hundreds of pupils and has
contributed significantly to the educational process, in addition to
sponsoring parentless children, providing food, clothes and medicines to
the needy.

Shahroor – Damascus, Syria
Dr.Sharoor
has painful experience an incentive to accomplish something for his
original homeland, Palestine. He established Palestine Handicapped
Authority in 1988. His works include Guide to Geriatrics Hearing
Impairment. His humanitarian work is numerous.

William P Magee – USA
Dr.
Magee is a leading plastic and craniofacial surgeon. He is the founder of
Operation Smile, a private non-profit volunteer medical services
organization providing reconstructive surgery and related healthcare to
indigent children. He spent half of his life to this organization.

4-Dr.
Sharadkumar Dicksheet – India
Dr.Dicksheet
is plastic and Reconstructive surgeon. He wanted to make a difference and
use his talents to provide” A New Life” to the poor and indigent
children of India with congenital and other facial deformities. To-date,
56,600 surgeries have been performed. Through his human spirit and medical
intervention, over 5.5 million people in India have been touched by his
life changing surgeries. Dr. Dicksheet is disabled and a heart patient
too.

Dr. Jaffar Ali
– IVF Laboratory, Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar.
Dr.
Jaffar Ali’s main contribution to assisted reproduction technology (ART)
in recent years is the pioneering work and formulation of an efficacious
protein-free human embryo culture medium. Dr.Jaffar Ali is awarded for his
original article,” Investigation into the Nutrient Requirement of the
Human Embryo: Successful formulation and clinical trial of a novel
protein-free embryo culture medium”.
