First Spinal Fixation operation using 'Neuro Navigation' (Image Guided Surgery) performed in the UAE at the Neuro Spinal Hospital, Dubai

DUBAI-The first spinal fixation operation using "Neuro Navigation was carried out on an eighteen year old male who was involved in a motorbike accident last month and sustained a displaced, unstable spinal fracture, potentially risking to compromise his spinal cord.  For this type of fracture to be fixed, screws, hooks and rods are needed.  At the Neuro Spinal Hospital, located in Jumeirah, Dr. Abdul Karim Msaddi and Dr. Farid Kassab, performed this delicate spinal fixation operation, using the latest Navigation System (computer image guided surgery), for the first time in the Emirates.

Image Guided surgery allows the surgeons to view 3D images of the spine throughout the operation, ensuring a more thorough, faster and safer surgical procedure.  Additional advantages to this type of surgery are reduced exposure to X-rays, more precise intra-operative localisation by using the high Computerised Tomography Scan (CT Scan) accuracy, (instead of the classical fluoro imaging) and it allows less invasive spinal surgery.  The result is that the patient benefits by having more accurate, precise surgery, less trauma to their musculature and therefore heal quicker.

Dr. Abdul Karim Msaddi said “At the Neuro Spinal Hospital, our surgeons are able to utilise the latest technology, which is only available in a few centres worldwide.  Our 18 year old patient is up and walking 2 days after his surgery.”

The patient said “My stay at the Neuro Spinal Hospital is equivalent to a home away from home.  I have felt very secure and comfortable.”
