New Middle East Journal of Family Medicine Launched

The Middle East Journal of Family Medicine was launched on July 1, 2003, online at www.mejfm.com. This journal representing family doctors in 24 countries aims to lift the status of family medicine as well as focus on the particular health needs of the region.

The journal therefore has an extensive Editorial Board with 12 Middle East countries and 13 international countries represented. Affiliate and supporting organisations include: The Abyad medical Centre and Middle East Longevity Institute, Lebanon, Department of Family Medicine, Qatar, The Family Medicine Specialty Training Program, Kuwait, Australian Family Physician, and medi+WORLD International.

Chief Editor is Dr Abdulrazak Abyad, of the Abyad Medical Center in Lebanon, who has been the driving force behind the implementation of the journal. The Editorial Board also includes some highly respected individuals working, who are champions of family medicine in their respective Middle East countries.

Online publishers, are medi+WORLD International, publishers of medical education and information and partners with Wonca - World Organisation of Family Doctors in the Global Family Doctor project. The journal will be published twice yearly in 2003, quarterly in 2004, and bi-monthly in 2005.

Stories in the first edition, cover Family Medicine issues in the region, cancer screening, the rarity of prostate cancer in Yemen, cardiac rehabilitation, the rising need for EBM, aging mechanisms, as well as regional news.

As possibly the only exclusively online medical journal, the MEJFM will use technology to provide a quality and innovative service. Animation and video will be used, as appropriate, in the journal, e.g. in the clinical quiz. While the journal itself will be available online for viewing at any time, the journal home page will also provide a link to the Global Family Doctor daily news service and will also have its own Noticeboard for regional family doctors to use for their own communication purposes. The journal will remain archived on the site.

A browser is also being developed exclusively for the journal.

The editorial board seeks articles from the region, for publication. While still in 'pilot' stage, it is the intention to eventually fully index the journal. We wish to feature medical news stories from around the region and hear of items of interest to the profession.

Most importantly we wish to support the family doctors of the region and bring to their notice the information they need for the quality care of their patients. We hope this will become an important resource for doctors and their patients by truly reflecting the needs and the values of doctors in the region.
