Training in Genetic Counselling and Advisory Skills
With the explosion of genetic
information and testing, the roles of doctors and nurses are becoming more
complex and they will be expected to have up to date skills and knowledge
in genetic medicine, particularly understanding and explaining the risks,
testing and treatments.
Australian Genetics Training Centre (AGTC) was established to provide
practical training services to health practitioners to facilitate better
knowledge and skills in genetic health management. Our service offers you
an opportunity to become more proficient and confident in responding to
genetic illness and predisposition management of your patients.

Why Learn about
Genetics?
With so many illnesses and conditions having a genetic cause and able to
be genetically tested, many doctors and nurses are recognizing the need to
improve their understanding of genetics. A practical understanding of
genetic health management includes:
a. Taking a family history and identifying risks of disease
development
b. Counselling patients prior to screening or testing
c. Advising on preconceptual, prenatal and antenatal testing
d. Understanding familial cancer testing and screening
e. Advising on screening and treatment for adult onset diseases
f. Knowing referral guidelines to genetic specialists
